Ben, 16

Harris Academy, Peckham

I feel I’ve come a long way because in Year 9 I was bunking off and staying away from school a lot; getting to school and back safely was a real problem.

Then I heard about Young Enterprise and was told by friends and people from home that it would really help me. I got involved, started contributing and I really liked it; I enjoyed everything about it- I even became Vice-Chairman of my company.

I now have certificates for communication skills; experience working with others and I have a lot more confidence talking in public. I have also learned that I have to take responsibility for myself; my own actions. That is something that will really help me in my future as YEL teaches you about real life; life is hard and you don’t get everything handed to you on a plate. You have to work hard and prove yourself.

I would say to others to get involved as, if it helped me, it can help anyone. With YEL on your CV, employers know they can trust you and that you’re hard working and have proved yourself; that is what it’s about. I just think YEL sets you up for life. I no longer stay away from school.
