Tim Miller HSBC

Board Member Testimonial

I first became involved with Young Enterprise (YE) whilst at school. In the first term, I was part of the sales team and tackled with relish the task of selling as many photo frames as possible! In the second term, we restructured and I took on the role of Managing Director. In that capacity, I was most concerned with selling the remaining stock, preparing the annual report and organising our presentation at the annual awards event. All in all, a great experience where I put theory into practice, met new people and acquired new skills.

Happily, the end of that year did not represent the end of my involvement with YE. On leaving university, I joined HSBC on the Executive Management Programme. In my first placement - Plymouth - I acted as an adviser to a Young Enterprise Company. This involved me acting as an unpaid consultant at a weekly meeting of Young Enterprise - essentially making sure that the group of teenagers was supported in any way I knew.

On moving to Chatham in Kent, I repeated the role of adviser, this time for a company that was promoting a band. Half the company was the band and the rest organised events for them to play at. On that occasion, I seemed to be a mixture of 'groupie' and 'roadie' and enjoyed the experience hugely!

When working in London, I was invited to join the Central London Strategic Board. At first, I helped organise the annual presentation evening and also delivered training to advisers, link teachers and achievers. I now act as Chairman and am responsible for the successful implementation of the overall strategy for London.. We're ahead of plan and all systems go, so I'm a happy man!

Young Enterprise continues to broaden my horizons, present fresh challenges and give me enjoyable experiences. I would heartily recommend involvement in YE - in whatever capacity - to anyone who wants to further their entrepreneurship education, contribute something to the local community or simply meet some lively individuals!
